What the CeCe McDonald Sentencing Says to Me
http://transplantportation.com/2012/06/04/what-the-cece-mcdonald-sentencing-says-to-me/
This is the kind of twist in logic that turns the criminal justice system into a sick Mobius strip where people on the margins can’t win... It’s not new that people harass trans women. It’s not new that trans women get singled out by police for committing some kind of infraction and arrested. It’s not new that they are forced in with non-trans men, that they get shitty legal representation, are persecuted by prosecutors and see no leniency from judges. But even with all of that not newness, I find myself completely unprepared for a trans woman or anyone to be arrested for defending herself from A NEONAZI IN A GROUP OF OTHER BIGOTS who had already caused substantial bodily injury to her. It amounts to, in my opinion, convicting someone FOR SURVIVING. And that is intolerable.

I understand about the scissors.
http://www.keffy.com/i-understand-about-scissors/
In his words to Ms. McDonald at her plea bargain, Judge Daniel Moreno stated that in introducing scissors into the altercation--which was not the first weapon brought into play, as she’d already been lacerated with a broken beer mug--"You realize. . . you endangered other lives."Other lives. Yes. Because as long as it was only her life being endangered, that was acceptable. Because, hey, she was trans and black and that made some drunken assholes angry, and we all know how that’s supposed to end. Let me tell you a story...

Great big JudgeFAIL there.

The Hidden Autistics - Asperger's in Adults
http://aspiestrategy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/hidden-autistics-aspergers-in-adults.html
It took a few sessions to realize this fine gentleman suffered mightly with the symtoms of Asperger Syndrome, which he kept well managed and thoroughly hidden. Contrary to the stereotyoes of adults on the spectrum, my patient displayed no "meltdown" behavior, was keenly (TOO keenly) aware of people's reactions to him and exhibited no bizarre special interests or encyclopedic knowledge of vaccuum models...

Alan Moore Elaborates His Stance on "Before Watchmen"
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=36996
Moore further calls his "Watchmen" contract "creator-hostile" according to lawyers who offered to review the original document he'd signed. "There was a clause that essentially said that, if in the future, there were any documents or contracts that I refused to sign, DC was entitled to appoint an attorney to sign them instead," said Moore. "[The lawyers] said it was the most creator-hostile contract they’d ever seen."

Amanda's Million

Last week Amanda Palmer became the first musician to raise more than a million dollars on Kickstarter. Her project's numbers: $1,192,793 pledged by 24,883 people in 30 days. A musician getting a million dollars from the internet is a very big deal. How did it happen?

Well, she worked her arse off for years and years. That woud be how.

Shut Up and Take My Money: Fans Should Hire Artists
http://www.wired.com/opinion/2012/06/opinion-baio-fan-funding/
Two weeks after Kickstarter launched in April 2008, I was fishing around for an idea to test the platform and launched a project for Kind of Bloop... But unlike nearly every other album project on Kickstarter, I’m not a musician. I’ve never written a song, with or without vintage videogame consoles, and wouldn’t know where to start. Instead, I hired musicians I love to make the music.

A Message To Women From A Man: You Are Not "Crazy"
http://thecurrentconscience.com/blog/2011/09/12/a-message-to-women-from-a-man-you-are-not-%E2%80%9Ccrazy%E2%80%9D/
You’re so sensitive. You’re so emotional. You’re defensive. You’re overreacting. Calm down. Relax. Stop freaking out! You’re crazy! I was just joking, don’t you have a sense of humor? You’re so dramatic. Just get over it already! Sound familiar? If you’re a woman, it probably does... Gaslighting is a term to describe manipulative behavior used to confuse people into thinking their reactions are so far off base that they’re crazy...

Why We Need To Stop Saying "Calm Down" and "You’re Crazy"
http://thecurrentconscience.com/blog/2012/02/21/stop-saying-calm-down-and-crazy/
When people hear the order to "calm down"--no adult ever responds with relief, "Phew, thank god you told me to calm down, otherwise I’d be flipping out." We will also never hear anybody say, "Wait! That’s an option?! I can be calm?" So why do we insist on requesting or demanding calm?

Injection offers hope for treating auto-immune disease
http://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/health/injection-offers-hope-treating-auto-immune-disease
The new approach involves increasing good regulating cells in the body, unlike most current research which focuses on stopping "bad" or "effector" cells... The researchers induced the body’s T-cell front-line defences by injecting cell-signalling proteins called cytokines, in particular cytokine Interleukin-5 (II-5 cytokine)...

A Look at the Conduct of Graham Linehan and Steven Moffat on Twitter
http://richardhcooper.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/look-at-conduct-of-graham-linehan-and.html
"Twitter made me", says the heading on The Guardian's latest interview with Graham Linehan (much to his consternation), but the question is, what has it made him into, and what kind of monster is it making of media bigshots?

It would be hypocritical of me not to point out that some of the behaviours of commenters is pretty rude, and mention that I've blocked and banninated folks over it before. But I also suspect that if you're a Celeb, you prolly shouldn't be naked on the Internet the way these folks are: that's where PR folks and Media Advisors and all that actually have a role to play that isn't sycophantic oral happy-ending.

With recent sightings of an unusual animal reported in the Nimbin Valley and Byron Bay, and many more sightings in previous years across the region, wildlife expert Gary Opit said a thylacine was a possible explanation.

‘Island-Hopping’ to the Stars
http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=21719
...a pattern of slow expansion would make interstellar migration almost inevitable if humans (or their machine surrogates) can adapt to life in the outer Solar System and beyond. Propulsion is always a huge issue, but in this scenario we also focus on the ability to build and maintain habitats on distant objects, exploiting their raw materials and preparing for the next leap outwards. Long-haul technologies would surely arise from a culture capable of these things, but the possibility exists that interstellar travel will mean slow and steady outpost building before the target is reached.

Dutch Pave the Way for Looser Copyright Laws: Mashups and remixes could be protected by law.
http://www.technologyreview.com/view/426884/dutch-pave-the-way-for-looser-copyright-laws/
Much to the displeasure of the wider EU, the Dutch want to liberalize their copyright laws to explicitly allow remixes and mashups. The irony is that their inspiration is not political movements like Sweden's Pirate Party, but America's laws about fair use.
